Cycling raincoats

Cycling raincoats are basically a short and light raincoat adapted to cycling. Cycling raincoats are indicated to protect us from the rain and wind to allow us to cycle without getting wet, but it is important to maintain the internal temperature, therefore, in addition to wearing cycling raincoats, it is important to take care of the layers of inner cycling clothing such as a t-shirt thermal jacket and cycling jersey, since cycling raincoats protect us from the rain but do not prevent us from getting cold, therefore, in addition to cycling raincoats, we must incorporate the rest of the layers of cycling clothing on our bicycle routes. Forget about staying at home on rainy days, since, with the cycling raincoats, you will enjoy your bike routes without having to get wet. It is important to properly choose the cycling raincoats that we are going to wear, since we need the cycling raincoats to be of good quality and really prevent water filtration. Normally, cycling raincoats are used for the upper part of the trunk, although, especially in urban cycling, there are models of cycling raincoats for the legs that prevent us from getting the clothes on the lower part wet on our bike rides.

Men's cycling raincoat

The men's cycling raincoat is the same as the cycling raincoats but with patterns adapted to the masculine stereotype, so that these men's cycling raincoats fit perfectly when we go cycling. A good quality men's cycling raincoat must have a heat-sealed zipper and fit perfectly to the body, to prevent the men's cycling raincoat from inflating with the air and having a contradictory effect with the aerodynamics when we ride a bicycle. The fabric is also important when choosing a men's cycling raincoat, since not all the fabrics of a men's cycling raincoat repel water in the same way.

Women's cycling raincoat

The women's cycling raincoat has a specific pattern for women, although not many brands manufacture women's cycling raincoats, as it is a garment that can be perfectly unisex and can be used for both men and women's cycling raincoats. A women's cycling raincoat must prevent water from seeping in, so its fabrics must be able to withstand the fall of water without penetrating the inner layers of women's cycling clothing, thus preventing us from getting wet.

Professional cycling raincoat

A professional cycling raincoat, are those cycling raincoats that are made with high performance and quality fabrics, since a professional cycling raincoat is exposed to inclement weather, cold and rain, so a professional cycling raincoat must be able to protect us of these elements in our bicycle routes. In addition, a professional cycling raincoat has a heat-sealed zipper and allows cooling of the body at the same time, which prevents water from penetrating.

Raincoats

The most experienced cyclists know that choosing our equipment properly and dressing in the most appropriate way is essential to enjoy cycling when bad weather arrives, cold, wind or rain.

How many times have we stayed home because it was raining? Do you still think that you can't go out with your bike when the weather is not on your side? Today there are no excuses, rather let's say that in any case it will be due to lack of desire since we have a solution for everything.

Using our bicycle on these occasions of rain and storm, for example to go to work, when traffic and caravans are usually quite common and cause certain traffic jams, is a very good option as long as the appropriate clothing is planned.

This is why the raincoat was invented!! Don't let some clouds leave you without your way out.

A good cycling raincoat, whether it is designed to be a windbreaker, waterproof jacket or raincoat itself, has to be thought out and designed to protect you from these adverse weather agents. Many fans confuse these garments and their properties, so it is convenient to be very clear about the difference between a windproof garment (or windscreen) and a cycling raincoat. Choosing correctly between one or another option will depend on something as important as whether we finish our route wet or not. That is why we must know perfectly the difference and the use that is given to each of them. Below we will give some guidelines that will make us better understand the usefulness of each of them and opt for the option that best suits us.

Differences between windbreakers, waterproof jackets and raincoats

A fairly simple difference is that the windbreaker material, as its name suggests, will only protect you from the wind, and therefore also from the cold, creating a pleasant thermal sensation on days when the wind blows strongly. Normally they tend to perspire better than raincoats but they do not protect from the rain as the latter do. The raincoat, on the other hand, is, by definition, a waterproof garment, a jacket designed to pedal in the rain and not get wet. Most windbreakers also protect if we encounter some rain, very fine or light and for a short time; however, we must be clear that these types of garments are not waterproof!

Windbreakers or jackets: We can find windbreakers of many types, fabrics or materials and prices. From very fine, light and compact garments; others more robust and with more insulating membranes.

A winter jacket can also be windproof, with which we would be facing the union of a winter jersey that incorporates thermal materials, and a windproof garment that protects us from the outside. We can say that here there are also a large number of options depending on the cut, weight and weather resistance that we are looking for. So once we have established our budget, we have to think about how you will use your new acquisition. We must take into account characteristics such as if you like to ride fast and light on your bike, so you can opt for a windbreaker or jacket with better breathability, a slimmer cut and a certain ease of transport. Or instead, if something more resistant is required, perhaps to go to work, or for the most suffered daily use on a bicycle, what you require is a more flexible cut and with the possibility of even being able to incorporate a hood . In this case, we could take into account how useful this type of jacket can be even off the bike.

If we speak in economic terms, some models that are cheaper are just a plastic that does not perspire a little and that can repel water with some efficiency. The most expensive, on the other hand, usually have sophisticated anti-wind membranes that allow perspiration with greater solvency, and also provide quite remarkable protection against rain.

But we insist that a windbreaker is not a waterproof garment. If we run into a rainy day, we will end up wet. As we have already seen, there are many variants in garments to prevent the wind, while in the case of the raincoat there are actually very few options.

Raincoat: For a raincoat to be really effective against the rain, it must meet a key requirement: the seams must be heat-sealed. The fabric it is made of is usually not so important since you can use a very good and very waterproof fabric, but if the seams are not heat-sealed, the water will seep through. Normally the impermeability of a fabric is variable and is measured in columns of water per cm2.

This quality is what sets them apart from the rest and what makes truly waterproof raincoats such expensive garments.

since not all fabrics allow this heat-sealed treatment. At the same time, this has a negative influence on the fact that the garment is not very breathable, so if we wear our raincoat closed and increase the effort, we will feel that we are “cooking in our own sweat”. This problem is increasingly solved by the different textile industries that strive to offer us a type of clothing that effectively combines the ability to perspire and expel sweat and to isolate us from cold and water. Although there are fabrics that achieve good performance in both matters, the truth is that in some way the square of the circle must also be sought. So a highly recommended way to complement it would be to know how we should dress properly to ride in winter, and how to keep warm on the bike and under our raincoat.

How to use our raincoat

When it comes to how to use our raincoat, we must bear in mind that it is very important to maintain body temperature due to the condensation that is generated inside the raincoats. So for a good use of our raincoat we recommend wearing many layers so that the inner layers are the ones that maintain body heat. For which we could say that a correct use of it would entail clothing such as the following;

An undershirt with long or short sleeves close to the body and made of cotton, which will be the one that absorbs sweat. Another looser garment made of a material that does not absorb sweat as much (such as synthetic material) and allows the skin to breathe. And finally we recommend a fleece or thermal jacket.

In this way we will be prevented from using our raincoat at any given time, which will only require its placement on top and which, at the same time, will allow us not to wet any of the clothes that we are already wearing and will remain warm throughout the journey, It will also make our sweat transpire much better.

Raincoats with or without a hood?

There are many cycling raincoats that do not have it, since depending on the cycling that is going to be practiced, it can bother to wear the helmet. Although, on the contrary, there are many other raincoats that do have it incorporated, since in this case it will almost completely cover your head and face and you will have no problem putting on the helmet. There are even many raincoat hoods that come with a visor that will cover even more of your face.

In short, as with everything, whether or not we opt for its use will depend on the use we give to our raincoat and the amount of protection we are looking for on our bike.

Types of raincoats

In short, we can say that the raincoat is practically a light raincoat that is made of different materials, and that its final price depends to a greater extent on it. A good quality raincoat, as we have already mentioned, has to be able to evacuate all the sweat that we generate and at the same time not let the water stop as a fundamental function. Once we have taken this into account, we can summarize the different types of raincoats;

• Depending on the utility that we are going to give our raincoat:

This would be, as we already know, the main and fundamental decision that we must make to choose one type of raincoat or another, since depending on the use that we are going to give it, we will be able to differentiate between the aforementioned windbreakers, waterproof jackets or raincoats, and that as we already know they do not serve the same purpose.

• Depending on the materials: Basic raincoats and raincoats with greater protection, with windproof membranes:

The materials of what our raincoat is made of will depend on its value. A cheap raincoat will do you good if it doesn't rain much in your area or rather punctually, it won't evacuate sweat well but it will protect you from a good downpour. On the other hand, if you live in rainy areas, do not hesitate and invest money in a good cycling raincoat, you will appreciate it if you are one of those who does not like to stay at home.

• Raincoats with or without a hood:

We already know that this decision is something more personal, that it will depend a lot on the area where we are and how protected we want to be. But rather it is considered as an option to complement the use of our raincoat.

• Rain ponchos: Their protection goes beyond the trunk and arms, but also covers the legs and head, if what we are looking for is a type of complete protection.

Some extra features like pockets, hoods, and zippered vents might seem like a really good idea; but at the same time it can also be detrimental to the performance of the garment by being too bulky and not being able to be carried in a back pocket when not being worn. Also, extra features always add to the cost final.

Finally, and by way of conclusion, we must refer to the care that a good raincoat needs since, like any other cycling garment that you acquire, one of its worst enemies is the washing machine. The use of detergents can eliminate the waterproof coating and conditioners can clog the pores and fiber that help the management of the tissue for its respiration. Therefore, we always recommend reading the washing instructions before obtaining any garment.
